Textbook:

  • Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 2nd Edition by Briggs, Cochran, and Gillett
  • We will cover Chapters 2-6. Read Chapter 1 on your own if you need to refresh your memory
  • If you will not be taking any more semesters of calculus, you can get the shorter version that contains only Chapter 1-6
  • If you buy from a vendor other than the campus bookstore, make sure you get a valid MyMathLab access code (which is the same as the eBook access code)

Grades:

  • 32% Final exam
  • 21% Midterm exam 1
  • 21% Midterm exam 2
  • 13% Quizzes
  • 11% Online homework
  • 2% Writing assignment

Curve:

  • Individual exam scores will not be curved
  • At the end of the semester I might curve your overall scores.  The curve will be at least as generous as the usual A- for 90%, B- for 80%, etc.

Homework:

  • Will be done online using MyMathLab.  To access from the course website, select Modules -> Pearson -> "MyLabsPlus Online HW and eBook"
  • Will be due on Mondays
  • Is due at 11:59 p.m. on the due date.  Any part of the homework submitted after this time will receive at most 50% credit. Any part of the homework submitted more than 24 hours after this time will receive no credit.
  • Your lowest score will be dropped

Quizzes:

  • On Tuesdays (at the beginning of class, so ask your questions the day before.)
  • No make-ups for any reason
  • Your lowest two scores will be dropped
  • Electronic devices (including calculators), notes, and formula sheets are NOT allowed

Midterm exams:

  • Tuesday, September 29 (first exam)
  • Tuesday, November 3 (second exam)
  • Electronic devices (including calculators), notes, and formula sheets are NOT allowed

Final exam:

  • Wednesday, Dec. 9, 12:45-2:45 p.m. in the usual room (234 Culler Hall)
  • The final exam is cumulative
  • Electronic devices (including calculators), notes, and formula sheets are NOT allowed
