Text:

  •  Calculus (Early Transcendentals), by James Stewart (8th edition). Getting a paper copy is not necessary, but you may want one. 
  • Some options for buying the book can be found here.
  • We  cover Chapters 12-16; see the calendar for the sections that are covered in this semester.

Homework:

  • Recommended homework for Chapters 12-16.
  • You will do a  group-work in class each Monday; these are collected and will be counted toward your grade. I will drop your lowest score.
  • Look at this file to find your group.

Quizzes:

  • There will be ten quizzes throughout the semester.
  • Quizzes are given on Fridays and will be based on sections covered on  that week.  
  • Each quiz will consist of one to three problems either taken directly from the homework assignments or very closely related to the homework assignments.
  • These quizzes will be taken at the end of the class period on the day in which they are given.
  • Only your eight best quizzes will count towards your grade, therefore, no make-up quizzes will be allowed for any reasons. If you happen to miss a quiz then it will count as one of those that are dropped.

Tests:

  • There will be three in-class tests.
  •  Make-up tests will be given only in the case of an unavoidable emergency to students who obtain permission to miss a test in advance.
  • The dates for the tests are as follows:

           Test I: February 23.

           Test II: March 16.

           Test III: April 20.

Final Exam:

  • The final exam is cumulative and will be on May 14 from 3:00--5:00 pm.
  • Electronic devices (including calculators), notes, and formula sheets are NOT allowed.

  • Homework  8%
  • Tests (I), (II), and (III) 42%
  • Quizzes  20% 
  • Final Exam  30%

  • Quizzes and exams are closed book, closed notes.

  • Using self-phone and computer are NOT allowed in class.

  • Attendance is not a part of your grade but is expected. Miami University policy requires that “Every student is expected to attend every class session for which the student is duly registered.”
